SACROMONTE CAVES GRANADA

History

The Sacromontea neighborhood of Granada with a rich history, is world famous for its caves. caves. These rock-hewn dwellings, originally inhabited by the gypsieshave witnessed centuries of culture y tradition. Today, they are a symbol of the city and a magnet for tourists from all over the world.

Historically, since the beginning of mankind, caves have been used as dwellings. Thanks to the security they provided to nomadic peoples and the isolation that could be achieved, as far as temperature is concerned. Taking this fact into account, it is easier to understand why the Sacromonte caves were dug.

The reason that really pushed to its creation has to do with those cultures that had to leave Granada due to the conquest of the Catholic Monarchs. And, as we all know, before this moment there were three cultures living together, Christians, Muslims and Jews. But from the moment the Catholic Monarchs officially conquered the Kingdom of Granada, they decreed that all those who wanted to remain in it would have to convert to Christianity. Since it would be the only religion allowed. The exiled Jews and Muslims were joined by nomadic gypsies from parts of Europe and Africa. For this reason, nowadays the gypsies are the majority of the inhabitants of this particular neighborhood. In fact, many of them still maintain their own language, known as Caló.

This law forced all those who did not want to abide by it to leave the city. But then, what we now know as the neighborhood of Sacromonte, was the Valparaíso mountain and was out of the control of the city of Granada. Therefore, all these people forced to emigrate settled here. And since they did not have enough resources to pay for building materials, the survival instinct made them think that by digging in the rock they could have a house. Thus, the caves of Sacromonte Granada were born.

As we have mentioned, the uses that are given to them are very varied. However, its main function as a house is still maintained in many cases. Especially, not only because of the curiosity of the site itself. But because, in winter they are quite warm, while in summer they are very fresh.

The caves of Sacromonte are much more than simple dwellings. They are a living museum that transports us to a past full of flamenco, handicrafts y ancestral customs. Inside, we can admire objects from ceramics, basketry and tools of ancient crafts. Visiting these caves is to immerse yourself in the life and discover the roots of one of Spain’s most exciting artistic expressions. Spain: the flamenco.
