But from the moment the Catholic Monarchs officially conquered the Kingdom of Granada, they decreed that all those who wanted to remain in it would have to convert to Christianity. Since it would be the only religion allowed. The exiled Jews and Muslims were joined by nomadic gypsies from parts of Europe and Africa. For this reason, nowadays the gypsies are the majority of the inhabitants of this particular neighborhood. In fact, many of them still maintain their own language, known as Cal\u00f3. <\/p>\n\n

This law forced all those who did not want to abide by it to leave the city. But then, what we now know as the neighborhood of Sacromonte, was the Valpara\u00edso mountain and was out of the control of the city of Granada. Therefore, all these people forced to emigrate settled here. And since they did not have enough resources to pay for building materials, the survival instinct made them think that by digging in the rock they could have a house. Thus, the caves of Sacromonte Granada were born. <\/p>\n\n

As we have mentioned, the uses that are given to them are very varied. However, its main function as a house is still maintained in many cases. Especially, not only because of the curiosity of the site itself. But because, in winter they are quite warm, while in summer they are very fresh. <\/p>\n\n
